Taanbaan’s handwoven red-and-indigo striped cotton saree — at the World of Vettuvam launch
This one is not a costume. It is what Sobhita Dhulipala wore to the World of Vettuvam launch in Chennai in September 2026 — the first look at Pa. Ranjith's Vettuvam, the film she stars in alongside Arya and Dinesh, due in December. Nobody we read names the venue, so neither do we.
And the saree is not a mystery. It is Taanbaan's "Rust with Indigo Stripe band in body and Indigo with Gold striped Plain Borders Sari" — handspun and handwoven from indigenous desi cotton grown in Andhra Pradesh, listed on Taanbaan's own store at ₹34,000. It is also sold out: every colourway on that listing is crossed off. That price and that stock status come from the brand's own page, not from the clips going round.
What you are looking at. A red cotton body — rust in the weaver's daylight photos, a warmer red under the event lights — run through with fine stripes that come in pairs: a deep maroon line next to a pale gold one. Near the border the maroon thickens into a broad indigo-maroon band, then a narrow pale-gold border finishes the edge. The pallu is the same maroon, barred with pale gold, and ends in a fringe. Hand-woven, so it is soft and a little crumpled rather than crisp.
Under it, a deep wine-brown sleeveless blouse with a plunging neck and a tie at the back. Around it, gold thandatti-style earrings set with a red stone, a red bindi, kolam-style hand art on the back of her hand and her hair in a loose low bun.
What we are leaving off. The earrings are uncredited, and nothing on the high street came close enough to put on a card. Her footwear never shows.
Below is the real saree at the price Taanbaan charged for it, and under that the two pieces we picked ourselves.
