The closest saree found to hers, and it is matched on the three things that actually read: the colour, the weight and the restraint. A clean marigold — the same turmeric yellow, not gold and not ochre — in a light tissue that drapes and catches light rather than standing stiff, with sparse fine gold zari motifs on a plain field and only a slim zari selvedge. No contrast border, no worked pallu, nothing shouting. That borderless plainness is the whole point of the original and it is the hardest thing to find. Two differences, and they are both in the detail rather than the impression. Her motif is a stylised tree — a stippled canopy on a thin trunk, in clusters of two and three — and no saree on the Indian high street carries it; fourteen searches turned up nothing close, so the motifs here are small leaves and dots instead. And her drape has broad self-tone stripes in a deeper mustard running through the pallu and the pleats, which is what gives it the shifting look in the photographs. This ground is flat. At arm’s length the two are the same saree; at reading distance the buttas differ.
