Janaki Devi — Jaanu — spends most of 96 in one outfit: a plain yellow kurta, light blue jeans and a blue stole, hair in a low ponytail, a single small bindi. No jewellery to speak of. It is the least fashionable costume in the film, and it became the most copied.

Costume designer Subhashree chose yellow deliberately. Much of the film happens at night, in a school corridor and a car and an empty auditorium, and she wanted Trisha to stay bright and separate from the dark around her. The kurta-jeans-stole combination came from how Subhashree dresses herself — simple, unfussy, nothing competing for attention.

The pieces below are lookalikes, not the originals. The film's kurta was made for production and was never sold; what follows is the closest we can get on the high street — a solid yellow straight kurta, a plain blue chiffon stole and light-fade straight-fit jeans.
